Back Pain and How we Treat Our Patients

Back pain is quite common and may feel easier within a few weeks. However, it is important to recognise the causes, symptoms and treatment options available for back pain. Some of the common causes of back pain are:

  • Strained muscles from heavy lifting/carrying
  • Muscle tension
  • Poor posture
  • Working at a desk for long hours
  • Injury or strain during exercise
  • Frequent leaning or bending forward
  • Long driving sessions where you’re hunched over the wheel
  • Stress
  • Making an abrupt or awkward movement

Solutions for Lower Back Pain

Pain in the lower back is very common and it can be tempting to try and ‘self-crack’ the strain or tension you feel but this will create problems further down the line. Lower back pain can also cause headaches as it carries the tension up the spine.

A quick ‘fix’ can be to take an anti-inflammatory painkiller (like ibuprofen) but this doesn’t get to the root of the problem. Another way to ease back inflammation is to apply a hot or cold compress. A hot water bottle or heat pack is good to relax tense muscles whilst an ice pack, or even a bag of frozen peas, is good for inflammation. If you are at all concerned about your pain remember you can always contact us or your GP.

To help reduce your back pain it is important to stay mobile. Often, when experiencing back pain people will tend to stay seated or bed-bound but this is not advised as it can make your back seize up more. Doing gentle exercise, like walking, can help keep you mobile and carefully relax your muscles. Gentle stretches can also be beneficial for relieving back pain. One to try is a yoga stretch called ‘Child’s Pose’.

The Child's Pose

With your hands and knees on the ground, sink back through your hips to rest them on your heels.

  • Hinge at your hips as you fold forward, walking your hands out in front of you.
  • Rest your belly on your thighs.
  • Extend your arms in front of or alongside your body with your palms facing up.
  • Focus on breathing deeply and relaxing any areas of tension or tightness.
  • Hold this pose for up to 1 minute.

You can also try very gently massaging the tense muscles with your fingertips or a tennis ball, gently rocking into areas of tension to release them. This might be uncomfortable but should not be painful so be careful not to push too hard.
