What happens in your first session with a Chiropractor?

One of the most frequently asked questions we get here at Falcon Health is, ‘What happens in my first session with a chiropractor?’ It can be nerve-wracking visiting a chiropractic clinic for the first time, especially if you don’t know what to expect. Here at Falcon Health, we want to make the whole process as easy and stress-free as possible. To help you out, we’ve put together some of the things that will take place in your first chiropractic session.

Initial Assessment at your first chiropractic session

This is a broad term for what is a highly detailed and tailored experience. Your chiropractor will have a chat with you about your current condition. This includes any pain, stiffness or discomfort you are feeling in your muscles, joints or bones. Your chiropractor will ask you about your medical history and overall health.

Most importantly, you will have a chat about what your goals are for the sessions. Often, this is about pain relief but it can also involve setting movement and lifestyle goals. Some of the questions you answer may not seem important. However, it is all about getting a full picture of your lifestyle and habits. In this way, your chiropractor can provide you with the best help you need.

Sometimes, your chiropractor might determine that a different type of care is necessary. They will then refer you on to receive physiotherapy, sports massage or care from your GP.

Physical Assessment

After ascertaining your issues, your chiropractor will then carry out a physical assessment. You may be asked to remove some clothes or put a gown on but usually what you are wearing is fine. It’s a good idea to turn up in thin, loose-wearing clothes.

During the physical assessment, your chiropractor will gently manipulate different muscles, joints and bones. They look into your range of movement. This is very gentle and patient centric. If you are feeling high levels of pain or discomfort, your chiropractor will, of course, stop.

Your chiropractor will be able to feel levels of tension in your muscles, joints and tendons. Through this physical assessment, they can assess what chiropractic treatment will suit you best.

Hands-on chiropractic treatment

It is possible that your chiropractor will have time to offer you some hands-on treatment within the first chiropractic session. This involves manipulating your joints, muscles or bones to help relieve any tension or pain. Similar to a massage, your chiropractor can find points of tension and help relieve them. Once the tense spots are released, you should find pain relief and more movement within the first session.

Lifestyle changes

From the first assessment, your chiropractor can advise on lifestyle changes to help you. This could be advice on posture, movement and exercise. Your chiropractor may give you some gentle exercises to practice at home. This can help prevent future pain.
